Click on the view button in the upper left-hand side, change to Show All Devices. Select the non-indented entry for your Seagate drive. Warning : Formatting the drive will erase all data on the drive, so you should copy any data you want off the drive prior to formatting. Formatted it and it wouldn't work. Get weird errors on it. Figure it's just a bad disk. Take it back get a new one and exactly the same thing happens. Now note that Seagate put in big bold letter that it works with Macs.

However it comes formatted as NTSF and the installer says that if you want to use it with Time Machine you have to format it. My guess is that it's not compatible with High Sierra somehow. But I can't seem to find any info on this anywhere.

Optional Formatting and Partitioning

Anyone know what's going on or how to get it working with my Mac? Fixed it. Apparently it's a longstanding High Sierra bug that Apple refuses to acknowledge as a bug. From an Apple Discussion Forum solution 1.

I disconnected the unmounted grayed out drive. Then I reconnected the drive. Dialog box popped which said that the MacOS Now the WD Elements was shown with "Untitled" beneath it. Took Disk Utility's suggestion as to format, and after about a minute, it was formatted and mounted. That worked for me. Doing more searching there's lots of people having the same problem.

First High Sierra bug I've personally encountered. But man, you'd think that'd have been one they'd have fixed by now. Doesn't exactly make Apple look good. What's weird is that when you try and format it normally it won't work at all - even from within Seagate's app.

So if it's a bug with Disk Utility it appears to affect the command line version as well. Can you say what sort of Mac it is? Some older Macs may struggle with a drive that big, some newer ones too, there's a forum post on Apple complaining about a Mac Pro not mounting a 6TB drive. Do you have an external USB enclosure you can put it in temporarily to get it formatted?

How to Format External Hard Drive for Mac & Windows (MS-Dos or ExFat?)

It's an external in a USB 3 case so it's not just the raw drive. But it's a killer deal at CostCo. Get it while you can. Now your external drive has been formatted to be fully compatible with Apple MacOS, and you can edit, read, and write files to it as you want. Open the Disk Utility app and highlight your external hard drive.

If you select the one below it, the Partition option will be greyed out and become unclickable. Located on the left is a big blue circle with the name of your external drive together with its volume size. Then allocate the desired volume to each partition. You can do that by clicking the small white circle and dragging it around.

To check whether the operation is really successful, go to your Mac desktop. You should see multiple disk icons show up.

Partition the drive on Windows 10

I chose to create two partitions on my Seagate Expansion — one for backup, the other for personal use. That wraps up this tutorial article. I hope you find it helpful. As always, let me know if you have any issues during the formatting or partitioning process.

I can follow this to the letter until the partition section. I have a Seagate 1 TB external hard drive, but have already backed up my Mac once, so the Partition button is always grayed out. Same problem with partition greyed out on I can only select either one but partition icon is grey. Your email address will not be published. When I connected the Seagate to my Mac, the drive icon showed up like this.
